Today, the well research methods while drilling actively develop in Russia, Russian oil and gas companies use method of logging while drilling both for new fields exploration and optimization of producing ones. Logging-while-drilling with the use of gamma-ray logging and resistivimetry allows for: 
  • controlling well spatial position relative to geological objects while drilling to improve efficiency of the well drilled;
  • making reasonable decisions on changing the well trajectory depending on the changing geological conditions of the well while drilling;
  • logging in horizontal and highly deviated wells;
  • avoiding additional intermediate wireline or drilling tool conveyed logs to assess geological conditions in the well bore;
  • timely obtaining data for quantitative assessment of the formation parameter and reservoir properties.

For logging while drilling and geosteering the Directional and Horizontal Drilling Department uses the following modules for inclusion in the telemetry system assembly:

- For Tensor telemetry system:

1) Scenturion gamma ray logging module:
  • use of one of the most advanced gamma-modules in the industry;
  • patented method of protection against vibrations with reduced number of components - radial spring support of photo-electronic multiplier and scintillator;
  • use of the titanium casing - high gamma sensitivity;
  • proximity to the bit due to design feature - it is lower than the resistivity meter;
  • range of working temperatures up to 175 ºС.

2) Centerfire resistivity meter (resistivimetry):
Centerfire resistivimetry system uses standard transmitter-receiver design to provide multiple research depths of the well bore compensated resistivity.
Main operational benefits of the system include the possibility of studies at various depths: eight various depths of survey at two frequencies are possible: 2 MHz and 400 kHz, and two intermediate distances between transmitters which provides a more complete formation assessment. All raw data is stored in the system memory of the downhole module. Telemetry can be configured in real-time directly at the drill site.

- For APS SureShot telemetry system:

1) Gamma-ray logging probe manufactured by APS is a scintillation detector with a photomultiplier installed in a special protective casing, it protects against strokes and vibrations while drilling. A new version of gamma sensor also allows for monitoring operating parameters and consumes less power. The sensor is calibrated in accordance with API standard.

2) WPR resistivity meter manufactured by APS is geometrically compensated (symmetric design) dual-frequency (400 kHz and 2 MHz) dual-zone logging device intended for logging while drilling (LWD) and mud logging after drilling (MAD) of all types of wells. The device can be used for geosteering, well correlation, tracking trends in the reservoir pressure, determining depth of the casing string installation. It is possible to use it as an alternative to wireline logs; device configuration allows for logging during assembly running in hole with activated or deactivated (in case of dry drilling or use of foamed fluids) flow sensor. WPR symmetrical design with receiving antennas located in the center of the device makes it possible to compensate in real-time mode, almost prevents influence of invasive effect and improves measurement accuracy by suppressing oscillations in receiving channels. WPR can operate in all types of drilling mud, including oil and concentrated solutions, providing resistivity values in real time, with the possibility of flexible adjustment of values transmitted. High resolution data is stored in the device memory and can be read on the surface.
